Marti met Bill Nighy off Braodway
On a random Sun
day
in November a friend and I went into New York City for a walk and some holiday
shopping. We parked at a lot around 68th street and began making our way
downtown to Herald Square. As we were about to pass the Balducci's on 66th
street I noticed a very familiar and posh-looking form emerging from a car. The
following thoughts passed through my mind in about 3 seconds. "Wow, that guy
looks familiar. He almost looks like Bill Nighy from this angle. He's so lanky,
he could totally pass for Bill Nighy. But what would Bill Nighy be doing here.
Oh wait, he's on Broadway now. Oh my god... NO it isn't! YES IT IS!!! AAHHH!"
And then I stopped dead in my tracks with a goofy smile on my face and started
gushing about how I love his work and what a pleasure it is to meet him and he
extended his hand to me for a good shake. After a moment I settled down enough
to have a nice little chit chat while Bill was kind enough to humor me for a few
minutes. We talked a bit about what he was working on, how he was relieved
about not sitting through hours of make-up for Davey Jones, that he liked doing
The Vertical Hour, etc. I was about to say "nice to meet you" and leave him to
his shopping but I remembered that I had stuck a camera in my bag a few days
earlier. I asked if I could be a complete pest for a moment and would he mind
standing for a picture. He was quite nice about it, even when my friend started
experiencing technical difficulties with the camera that refused to take a photo.
In the end, we got the picture you see here and the day went on to be a lovely
little ray of sunshine, made all the more entertaining by a run-in with one of
the coolest men on the planet
